Kristjan Haule studies the theory of strongly correlated electron systems, which include high-temperature superconductors, heavy fermions, and systems exhibiting metal-insulator transition and colossal magnetoresistance. In these materials, the behavior of the electrons is strongly affected by their interactions and cannot be accurately described by the conventional solid state physics models, which treat electrons as virtually non-interacting. Haule invents theoretical and computational methods to describe and predict the properties of complex correlated materials. These methodologies provide estimates of experimentally measurable material parameters, such as the thermopower, neutron form factor, and dynamical structure factor, and not only help to understand the properties of existing correlated systems, but also design new materials with desirable properties.
Haule has successfully applied his methods to a wide variety of interesting systems, which until recently did not have a theoretical description, such as the new iron superconductors, cuprate high-temperature superconductors, transition metal compounds, nuclear fuels, heavy fermions, and nanodevices.
"New materials that don’t yet exist in the laboratory will enable us to do as yet unimagined things."
